Coo coo ka-choo, how do you do?
The other day, I was talking with my aunt and she asked what I planned to do for my birthday and I told her I hadn't thought of anything. She said, "Oh, but that's a Monday right?" and I checked the calendar. "Ah. It is next Monday." Next Monday?! What?! Where did June go?! I still had stuff I planned to do this month! Particularly posting something based on the crystalline items I've been drafting!
Sometimes I think back to a few years ago when I was unreasonably motivated for the future, I was super on top of trends! Of course, I wasn't following them myself, but as a nearly 19-year-old, I'd wanted to try my best to keep up to date. I knew the latest clothing styles, the most popular shows and games, even all the drawing challenges from artists I followed! I lamented to a friend recently that I still haven't completed my goal of learning every Fortnite dance and emote during lockdown (LOL). I realized, is that even still a thing that people do? Am I... out of touch?! Only adults are out of touch and I'm not that old, am I?
Being the totally level-headed person I am, I rapidly searched for things that are popular now. The amount of effort I used to use to keep on top of what's big really didn't need to be as intensive as it was. Sure, I'm way more online than I was pre-pandemic, but the pressure to be into everything I saw online has lessened a ton! The hours spent playing a video game I knew I wouldn't like, while also listening to an audiobook I knew I wouldn't like, while also using a second screen to watch a TV show I knew I wouldn't like are over!
So if I were to give advice to the me in 2019 who devoted all her time to everything she possibly could, don't do it! Fortnite is not as big as it was, so learn every K-pop dance since everyone's doing that instead! On a more serious note, don't waste the limited amount of time you have doing stuff you hate. Being able to say you watched however amount of shows or read whatever books is not the same as enjoying any of it! There's too much depressing stuff in the real world to turn right back around and immerse yourself in an equally depressing fictional world. It's completely okay to drop something the moment it feels like a chore to continue engaging with. Most importantly: Do not give in to the fear of missing out!
